The plumbing inside the walls at Creek Street is eighty-five years old. When we opened them up, there it was – original galvanized supply lines, a tub and shower valve assembly, all of it right where the first plumbers left it in 1941.

And it looked brand new. Clean matte grey steel. Not a spot of rust. Completely intact. The kind of work that makes you stop and just stare.

Our plumber actually felt bad cutting it out. Really. That is not something you hear on a job site very often. We had to run modern lines inside those walls, and we made an early call: if we ever have to touch the plumbing again down the road, we are not tearing walls out to do it. So some of the old lines had to go.

The tension is real. The original guys did their job so well that the work survived completely intact for eighty-five years, and the reward for finding it is that we have to take part of it apart. The new system is the right decision. That part is not complicated. But it still felt strange. He felt bad about cutting it out. So did I.

I want to put some of this on the record before it disappears behind drywall. That is what 1941 utility work looks like today. Pretty much perfect.
